OCTOBER 2024Message from Gécamines Chairman Guy-Robert Lukama

Through this monthly communication, I will share Gécamines’ updates and announcements. There will also be periodic updates on the important role the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is playing in critical minerals supply and how we can harness our rich natural resources to build a clean energy industrial future that benefits all.

Related to which, last month at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, I had the privilege of representing Gécamines at several high-level discussions on the future of critical minerals and Africa’s pivotal role in the global supply chain. It was a very busy week! A few of the key engagements are listed below:

  • Atlantic Council Roundtable – Gécamines representatives participated in a roundtable hosted by the Atlantic Council’s Critical Minerals Task Force. focused on the critical mineral supply chain. Alongside industry experts, policymakers, and sector stakeholders, the discussion emphasized the strategic importance of Africa in securing the global supply of critical minerals.
  • U.S. Development Finance Corporation Roundtable feat. John Podesta – During a private roundtable organized by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the U.S. Development Finance Corporation (DFC), I engaged with John Podesta, Senior Advisor to the U.S. President for Clean Energy Innovation and Implementation.
  • Atlantic Council Distinguished Leaders Gala – I attended the Atlantic Council Distinguished Leaders Gala, an event that honored global leaders in the fields of diplomacy, policy, and industry. We met with industry leaders and international policymakers at this event, aiming to bolster the DRC’s profile on the global stage.
  • Meetings with U.S. Counterparts on the Minerals Security Partnership – I took part in discussions with U.S. government counterparts regarding the Minerals Security Partnership (MSP), a collaborative effort to secure the supply chain for critical minerals. These discussions aimed at exploring how Gécamines can contribute to the MSP’s objectives while ensuring that the DRC’s interests are fully represented and respected in international agreements.

Third, on Monday, September 30th, our Kambove Mining facilities held their annual Open Day. Several Gécamines representatives participated in the day’s events, which marked our third year of production. A representative of the Minister of Portfolio, the Haut-Katanga Provincial Minister of Mines and Oil, and the Administrator of the Kambove Territory, also joined the program. This special occasion concluded with a symbolic football match, representing fraternity and marking a memorable end to an event rich with exchanges and new prospects for cooperation.

We are also pleased to announce the launch of our new English-language webpage. We hope that this will enable us to connect with more people as well as provide pertinent and timely updates to important audiences around the world.

Stay tuned for more updates and developments, and welcome to the “Message From Chairman Guy-Robert Lukama”. We look forward to continued communication with you.
